Created by Tracy Oliver, the Amazon Prime Video series Harlem follows four besties, Tye, Camille, Quinn, and Angie, as they try their very best to navigate their careers, relationships, families, and the ups and downs of life. Although each of these ladies have a lot going on in their personal lives, they all make sure that maintaining a sustainable, healthy friendship is also on the top of their list. They rarely ever miss a brunch, celebration, or phone call, and always make sure to show up for each other when it matters most. They are the definition of “if you fall, I’ll be there to catch you,” and are amazing representations of what real adult, Black women friendships look like.
Each character - I believe - reminds us of someone we know; they might even remind you of yourself. What I am saying is that although they are fictional characters on a television series, their experiences, pain, emotions, and opinions, is something we, in some shape or form, can relate to. From childhood trauma, toxic relationships, trying to find balance in their careers, and owning their truth, this show was made for today’s women.
Season 3 premiered on January 23 with two episodes, and two more following this past Thursday, January 30. I think I can speak for all fans who are literally bummed about this being the final season. I think we can all agree that having an Angie, Quinn, Camille, or Tye as our friends would be amazing. If you aren’t familiar, I created a little profile on who they are as people, why we hold them so close to our hearts, and what kind of friend they are. Now, if you are an avid Harlem viewer, I apologize in advance for the spoilers.
ANGIE

Angie (Shoniqua Shandai) is an aspiring actress and singer who is the epitome of the bestie you can turn up with. She is very blunt, outspoken, and always cracking a joke - even though sometimes it can be at the wrong time. She was once roommates with Quinn, who is a fashion designer and boutique owner, and took “what’s mine is yours to a whole new level.” Although they fuss and fight like sisters, when it comes down to it, they are always there for each other. To be transparent, you can’t stay mad at Angie for too long. She will end up making you crack a smile even during tears. She is the friend who will tell you to invest in your dreams, and that you will make the money back later. Essentially, if you need a friend to remind you of the baddie you are, Angie is definitely the one you call.
QUINN

Quinn (Grace Byers), as stated, is the very fashionable friend. She is a business owner who tries her best to keep everything together, and will exhaust all options before having to result to plan b, c, or d. She’s the quirky friend who while looking fabulous and fierce exteriorly, has a heart of gold. No, literally, she is the epitome of a girl’s girl, who loves her friends real bad.
CAMILLE

Camille, played by the one and only Megan Good, is an anthropology professor and author, and now mommy-to-be (spoiler alert). She’s super intellectual, and takes her research very seriously. I mean, she is a professor, of course! She is a thousand and one percent invested in building a financially stable life for herself, all while balancing her on and off situationship with her ex-boyfriend Ian. If you ever get your heart broken, she will be knocking on your door with your favorite bottle of wine and a huge hug.
TYE

Jerrie Johnson plays Tye, a lesbian woman in tech and creator of a LGBTQ dating app. She has commitment issues, until now (another spoiler alert), and was - key word, was - very fond of one night stands. If you need a friend who is going to keep it all the way real with you, Tye holds up her end of the bargain. She’s the one who, no matter if it hurts your feelings, is going to tell you the truth. She’s the one you call if you need practical and rational advice. She is very strong and independent, and although her dating life is what we like to call, a mess, her friends are definitely grateful for her adding her two cents from time to time. I should add that if you are exploring your sexuality and want to attend a Pride event, she’ll be down for your shenanigans. At least that's what she did for her bestie Quinn in season 2.
If you haven't already, I hope you find your girl tribe. I can't stress enough about how having an Angie, Quinn, Camille, and Tye in your corner would be. I think it's something we all need.
